A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH JOHANNESBURG – MY TOP 5 RESTAURANTS

I think it´s safe to say that I’m a food lover. If you follow me on Instagram for a while you’d probably noticed that me and my fiancé are into fancy restaurants and over all love good (!) food. We have the tendency to fall in love with the most hipster places in town but hey, that’s how we roll (literally, after 7 months of eating our way through Jozi).

Johannesburg is not your average tourist attraction. Most people just stop here on their way to Kruger or Cape Town. BUT Joburg has more (way more) to offer than most people think – especially in the food category. Damn, the past seven months have been a culinary dream, let me tell ya. If you ever have the chance to stay in Joburg for more than one night – check out the following places (btw it was extremely difficult to choose only 5 restaurants …but otherwise we´d be sitting here until the next morning. Starving.)

MARBLE

Oh Lord,… it´s called Marble. It has marble tables and the menus are in marble style – they could have brought a cold potato and I would have been the happiest person in this restaurant. But they didn’t, obviously. The food is high cuisine – it looks stunning and it tastes stunning. WORD! You have to try the banana parfait for dessert!!!!

THE BIG MOUTH

You like sushi. You’ll love this place. Again – the interior is the bomb! And so is the food. Philipp had a steak and it was just as good as my sushi. If you’re not hungry (how is that even possible) and you just want to have a couple of drinks, this is the right place. The Hong Kong Blossom Cocktail is a litchi lover´s dream. Go and sit at the marble (again!!!) bar and watch the chefs make the sushi from scratch.

TASHAS

There’s a Tashas in almost every cool neighborhood of Joburg. And each restaurant has a different “focus”. One is inspired by Manhattan, the other one is inspired by Champagne&Seafood and so on. For me personally this is the perfect place to have brunch. And again they have marble tables – am I in marble paradise here in Johannesburg!?!? The interior is also different depending on the specific focus. And you can order “extra avo” – I always feel so fancy.

CRAFT

I now tell you a secret of mine (all vegans please don’t kill me) – I’m a huge fan of chicken livers. My first thought when I saw them on the menu (of each and every restaurant in South Africa btw) “ugh”. But my fiancé made me try them and now I’m a believer. Soft and tender chicken livers in a Peri-Peri sauce with fresh ciabatta – AMEN. And CRAFT restaurant even has a chicken liver salad – which I had to try, of course. My fiancé went for the craziest milkshake on the menu (we were the attraction of the entire restaurant when the waitress brought it to our table – scroll down for the picture to get an idea).

SALVATION CAFÉ

And last but not least – here comes the brunch place with the best pancakes in Joburg. Saturday, caribbean pancakes and mimosas – you seriously don’t need anything more to be a happy foodie. The place is relaxed and laid-back and whatever, can we please talk about those pancakes…. It´s 10 p.m. at the moment and I’m craving those freakin´pancakes.
